Leave The Ring Behind

Leave The Ring Behind

I’m starting to realize that teaching beginners how to move their fingers correctly on the violin is a lot like the scene at the beginning of Lord Of The Rings, where Gandalf is convincing old Bilbo to leave the ring behind.

I’m like, “Your finger needs to go here, not there.”

They’re like, “NO!”

I’m like, “Yes, my lovable innocent child. Let me explain why… This is why {insert explanation here}.”

They’re like, “Ohhh… yeah, that makes sense.”

I’m like, “So your finger needs to go here, not there.”

They’re like, “But I don’t want to.”

I’m like, “But you should.”

They’re like, “Okay.” And then they start to play.

A couple notes into the passage I’m like, “You didn’t move your finger.”

And they’re like, “Oh… It’s, difficult.”

And I’m like, “Yes, it’s very difficult.”

And they’re like, “Okay, I’ll try again. But it’s going to be a struggle.”

And I’m like, “Good choice!”

And then they go win at life.
